Timex launches new Metropolitan smartwatches

Timex has launched a pair of new smartwatches as part of its Metropolitan range: First up is the round Metropolitan R. With a 42mm dark-grey sports-chronograph-lookalike case (no rotating bezel, though) and a leather strap, the Metropolitan R will do for someone who doesn’t like designs that scream ‘smartwatch’. This is also available in a women’s version, which, to our eyes looks pretty much the same except for its colour – ‘Blush’, in Timex’s words (Think of it as a light-cream with hints of rose gold). The Metropolitan R has a 1.2 inch 390×390 AMOLED display with Gorilla Glass, 24/7 activity tracking, GPS, a heart rate sensor, lift-to-wake, multiple workout modes, music control, find-my-phone, app notifications, a choice of 25 watch faces, and a proprietary OS.

The Metropolitan R is also water resistant to 30m, making it able to withstand ‘brief immersion’ in water. Swimmers, however, should really look elsewhere, and though these aren’t sports-focused in the same way as some of the competition, the inclusion of GPS might help attract runners. As far’s battery life is concerned, Timex says you could expect up to two weeks of usage.

Also launching alongside is the Metropolitan S. With a 36mm case, the S has a 1.65 inch 348 x 442 AMOLED display, and apart from the rectangular form factor, seems specced just like the Metropolitan R. Like its round cousin, the S also comes in two variants. A men’s version, in black, and a women’s (once again in ‘Blush’). Interestingly, these smartwatches aren’t built by Timex – these seem to be the results of a tie-up with Huami, better known as the maker of Amazfit watches.

The new Timex smartwatches will go on sale June 30, and they’re all priced the same – $179.
